Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

The Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity Research is a collaborative research center sponsored by the National Science Foundation with two university partners (UMBC and University of California San Diego), six government, and seven industry members. The Center's research is focused on addressing productivity, performance, and scalability issues in meeting the insatiable computational demands of its members' applications through the continuous evolution of multicore architectures and open source tools.

As part of its annual industrial advisory board meeting next week, the center will hold an afternoon of public tutorials from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Monday, 17 December 2012 in room 456 of the ITE building at UMBC. The tutorials will be presented by students doing research sponsored by the Center and feature some of the underlying technologies being used and some of their applications. The tutorials are:

UMBC will once again host the Global Game Jam. The weekend-long game development event will be held this year from January 25-27. UMBC is one of hundreds of host sites around the world. Other local sites include College Park, the Universities at Shady Grove, and George Mason.

“I expect an exciting mix of students, friends, alumni, and game developers for a weekend of creative fun,” says Dr. Olano, director of UMBC’s Game Development Track. Last year he and Visual Arts professor Neal McDonald ran the event out of UMBC’s GAIM Lab where game developers of all levels gathered to conceive and create video games around a common theme.

Last year the theme was Ouroboros, a symbol of perpetual renewal. The theme inspired games like Bit Exhaust, a space-invaders-esque Windows phone game and Snake ‘N Bake (pictured above), a two-player game where a snake must help a cupcake make it to the oven before the tasty confection gets hit by a fireball.

The theme for this year’s competition will be announced at 5 p.m. on January 25^th so that all parts of the game development process—from coming up with a game concept to finishing a playable video game–will have to be carried out during one single adrenaline-filled weekend.

UMBC Sophomore Blossom Metevier (CS ‘15) will be a panelist at Fueling the Future: Celebrating Computer Science Education Week and Computer Science in K-12 Classrooms and Policy, a briefing in Capitol Hill that’s part of Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek). Ceremonially celebrated during the birthday week of computer science pioneer Grace Hopper (December 9-15), CSEdWeek's goal is to share the message that computing and computer science education are essential.

Organized by the Computing in the Core Coalition and sponsored by the congressional STEM Education Caucus, Fueling the Future will give congressional staff and STEM education stakeholders an overview of the state and prospects of K-12 computer science education. Specifically, the fact that Computer Science is not taught in the majority of American high schools and how that needs to change.

Blossom joins panelists CSEdWEek co-chair Ruthe Farmer, Director of Strategic Initiates for the National Center for Women and Information Technology, technology writer Douglas Rushkoff, Alison Derbenwick Miller from Oracle, and Brenda Wilkerson from the Chicago Public Schools. Representative Dan Lipinski (D- IL), co-chair of the House STEM Education Caucus, will kick off the event with opening remarks.

Blossom will share her journey to becoming a Computer Science major. It started after she unexpectedly fell in love with programming during her Introduction to Computer Science class during her freshman year at UMBC. She will talk about why she chose the major and her future goals in the field. A Meyerhoff Scholar and member of UMBC's track team, Blossom plans on doing data visualization research in Dr. Jian Chen's lab this winter.

A free screening of the new film Codebreaker will be shown on Thursday, November 29 at 5:30pm in Hodson Auditorium at johns Hopkins University. The screening will be followed by a reception and question and answer session with the film's executive producer, Patrick Sammon.

Energy Conservation in Biometric Algorithms

Whether using iris recognition to gain access to a secure facility or face recognition to unlock a cell phone, biometric signal processing is rapidly becoming a part of everyday life. Many algorithms are being implemented on portable devices that have a limited battery life. This talk will present some work, conducted at the USNA Center for Biometric Signal Processing, which indicates that significant energy savings can be obtained by using C versus Java and Integers versus software Floats in applications written for the Android operating system. A comparison of the effect of using Integers versus Floats on a modern iris recognition algorithm will also be presented.

LCDR Robert Schultz is a submarine officer that has been assigned as a Junior Permanent Military Professor of Electrical Engineering at the United States Naval Academy. His research interests include hyperspectral and biometric image processing. As a member of the USNA Center for Biometric Signal Processing, he has recently been working to identify more energy efficient methods for biometric algorithm implementation.
