The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has 33 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty, four full-time lecturers and over 20 affiliate and part-time adjunct faculty. Current research concentrations include artificial intelligence, graphics and visualization, computer networks and systems, database and knowledge management, algorithms and computation theory, communications and signal processing, microelectronics, photonics and optical communications. The department has approximately 1100 undergraduate students in two degree programs: computer science and computer engineering. It has nearly 600 graduate students in four graduate programs: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering and cybersecurity.

The department is centered in the Information Technology and Engineering (ITE) building, which has an excellent laboratory and computing environment, and in the Technology Research Center, which has specialized research laboratories. A variety of governmental and industrial sponsors provided more than $7M in research expenditures in 2010.

The CSEE department offers degree programs leading to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science; the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering; and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. The B.S. programs provide a balanced practical and theoretical approach to the study of software and hardware, an approach that includes the latest advances in these two areas. The curriculum emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills applied to the analysis and design of real-world problems. Students are also given a broad background in the fundamentals of mathematics and the physical sciences. Each graduate degree program shares a similar structure and set of minimum requirements, and leads to the M.S. (with or without a thesis) or Ph.D. degree.  The department also has three graduate programs leading to a Master’s in Professional Studies: Cybersecurity, Engineering Management and Systems Engineering.

Academic ties are strong with other departments and programs, including: Information Systems, Biology, Geography, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Visual Arts and the University of Maryland Medical School.
