  3. Install and test your network hardware and software, if applicable.
  4. Decide if you need to:

Each option is described in the following table.

    Attention:

Two versions of Oracle8 cannot co-exist if they are of the same major version. For example, Oracle8 release 8.0.3 and release 8.0.2 cannot co-exist because they depend on common files; one overwrites the other.

If You Want to...   Then Review...

Install Oracle8 on a system containing no previous version of an Oracle database (known as a fresh installation)

These sections in this document before proceeding with the installation instructions.

Migrate Oracle8 from a previous version of Oracle7 Workgroup Server. For example, migrate from Oracle release 7.3.3 to Oracle release 8.0.3

Chapter 5, "Database Co-existence and Migration" of Oracle8 Getting Started for Windows NT .

Install Oracle8 into the same Oracle home directory as Oracle7 Workgroup Server

Note:

You need to install Net8 server on your Windows NT server and Net8 client on your client machine.

Review Oracle Installer Issues

Oracle Installer detects previous Oracle installations and attempts to use the same volumes, company name, and language when installing Oracle8. You can accept the default information provided by Oracle Installer or provide new information.

If you are installing Oracle products on a machine that has never had Oracle products before, you are prompted during installation to modify the PATH variable in the registry. If you choose Yes, Oracle Installer modifies this variable for you automatically.

An error message appears during installation if your system previously contained Oracle products and the volume containing those products no longer exists. To complete the installation, delete the ORACLE_HOME line from the registry and run Oracle Installer again. See Appendix C, "Configuration Parameters and the Registry" of Oracle8 Getting Started for Windows NT for instructions on editing registry parameters.

Install Oracle8 Servers and Clients on Windows NT
Note:

If you click Cancel in any Oracle Installer dialog boxes, Oracle Installer exits.

Note:

These installation steps assume that the CD-ROM drive is mapped to the D:\> drive.

To install Oracle8 products on a Windows NT server or client:

  1. Start Windows NT 4.0.
  2. Log on to your Windows NT server as a member of the Administrators group.
  3. Stop all Oracle services (if any are currently running).
    1. Choose Start>Settings>Control Panel.
    2. Select the Services icon.
    3. If any Oracle services exist and have the status Started, select them and choose Stop.
  4. Insert the Oracle8 CD-ROM disc into the mapped CD-ROM drive.

The operating system automatically detects your Oracle8 CD-ROM disc. The Oracle8-Autorun dialog box appears and prompts you to make a selection:

  5. Choose Begin Installation.
    Attention:

Each time you insert your CD-ROM disc, the process described in Step 4 occurs. To restart Oracle Installer without removing and re-inserting your CD-ROM disc:

      1. Open My Computer.
      2. Select the drive to which the CD-ROM disc is mapped.
      3. Double-click SETUP.EXE.

    The Language dialog box appears.

  6. Select a language, or click OK to accept the default language, English.
    Note:

The default language, English, is installed with every installation of Oracle8, in addition to any other language you select. To change your language after installation, see Appendix E, "National Language Support" of Oracle8 Getting Started for Windows NT.

The Oracle Installation Settings dialog box appears.

  7. Specify a company name and Oracle home directory in which to install Oracle products, then click OK.

    Note:

Oracle Installer determines the hard drive partition on your computer with the most available space. This hard drive partition becomes the default location of Oracle home. For example, D:\ORANT. Oracle Corporation recommends that you use this default setting.

    The Oracle8 dialog box appears.

  8. Select any of the following product installation options, then click OK.

Oracle8

The Oracle8 additional licensable Cartridges dialog box appears.

  1. Select the Oracle8 ConText Cartridge, then click OK.
    Attention:

If Oracle Installer detects an Oracle7 version of the database on your hard drive, it asks if you want to migrate your database to Oracle8. If you select yes:

      1. You are not prompted to select a type of database to install.
      2. Oracle Data Migration Assistant starts at the end of installation and migrates your Oracle7 database to Oracle8.

The Starter Database Installation Options dialog box appears.

  2. Select the type of database you want to install, then click OK:
    Database Type   This Option...

    Typical

Installs a fully configured and ready-to-use starter database with the following settings:

    • Name of ORACLE
    • System Identifier (SID) of ORCL
    • INTERNAL password of ORACLE

Oracle8 ConText Cartridge is also included in the starter database if you selected it in a previous dialog box.

    Custom using Oracle Database Assistant

Starts Oracle Database Assistant at the end of the installation process. This wizard helps you create a Typical or Custom database. The Typical option creates a standard database using default initialization parameter settings. The Custom option is only for DBAs familiar with advanced database creation procedures. See Chapter 9, "Creating a Database", in Oracle8 Getting Started for Windows NT for additional information.

    None

Does not create a database or start Oracle Database Assistant at the end of the installation. All other server components are installed. Create your own database after installation by following the procedures in Chapter 9, "Creating a Database", in Oracle8 Getting Started for Windows NT. The None option is only for DBAs familiar with advanced database creation procedures.

The Oracle8 Documentation dialog box appears.

  3. Choose to install Oracle8 HTML documentation on your hard drive or leave it on your CD-ROM disc, then click OK.
